The Swedish pharmaceutical company Recipharm has for the second time given its “International Environmental Award” to a renowned researcher for the best environmental performance within the pharmaceutical industry or the academic world. The award, which comes with a purse of 30,000 SOK (ca. 3000 €), was awarded to Professor Klaus Kümmerer from the Institute of Environmental Medicine and Hospital Epidemiology at the University of Freiburg in Stockholm on Sunday 18th October 2009. The award is aimed at encouraging the dialogue on environmental protection within the pharmaceutical industry.
Professor Kümmerer has been doing pioneering work in the field of ecotoxicology and environmental chemistry for twenty years. The chemist has been a professor at the Freiburg University Medical Centre since 2005. His major research focus is the investigation of harmful substances that enter the environment and the behaviour of pollutants, especially drugs, in the environment, the sustainable use and disposal of drugs as well as innovative concepts in wastewater treatment. The Department of Applied Environmental Research at the Institute of Environmental Medicine and Hospital Epidemiology at the Freiburg University Medical Centre is nowadays a leading light in these areas.
Professor Kümmerer's highly recognised research and publications, and his book "Pharmaceuticals in the Environment", which has become a standard text, provide society and the pharmaceutical industry with important insights and sustainable solutions - commented Lars Backsell, Chairman of Recipharm, speaking at the award ceremony in Stockholm. Recipharm is a leading contract drug development and manufacturing organisation. Protection of the environment plays a key role in the company's business philosophy.
