  • Development of biogenic packaging - 16/11/2020 IMG_1035.jpg

Sustainable packaging - the devil is in the detail

Modern packaging often boils down to a tick list of biogenic origin and/or biodegradability. But comprehensive sustainable packaging concepts need more than just that. Perishable foods, for example, require special barrier properties. The Albstadt-Sigmaringen University of Applied Sciences is researching packaging concepts for their sustainability.

Education as the key to a successful transition into a bioeconomy

National and international policy papers emphasize the role of the education sector in the transition into a bioeconomy. On the practical level, various actors are working on programmes to prepare professionals for future challenges. The University of Hohenheim, for example, offers a bioeconomy master's programme and is one of the universities that have laid the cornerstone for the “European Bioeconomy University” consortium.

European "AlpLinkBioEco" project involving BIOPRO successfully launched

The goal of the Interreg Alpine Space project "AlpLinkBioEco" is to establish better connections between Alpine regions and to focus more on biobased and circular value chains. BIOPRO is working to achieve this goal as part of a consortium involving 13 other European partners from France, Italy, Austria, Switzerland and Slovenia.

ISOCALM: Thermal insulation boards made of elephant grass

Constructing buildings with renewable resources is becoming more and more trendy. The Schorndorf-based company ISOCALM GmbH specialises in the manufacture of thermal insulation boards made of elephant grass. The elephant grass is grown and processed in Africa and global distribution of the boards is organised through the company's headquarters in Germany.

Forests as providers of ecosystem services – the facets and consequences of logging

One billion people worldwide rely on forests as living spaces. Illegal and legal deforestation endangers people’s livelihoods as well as social and economic structures. It also has a detrimental effect on the global climate. Prof. Dr. Daniela Kleinschmit, Professor for Forest and Environmental Policy at the University of Freiburg, discusses the causes and consequences of deforestation. She is co-editor of an international report on illegal…

    The aluminium trees of Sulawesi

Trees of the genus Symplocos in the Indonesian mountain rainforest store so much aluminium in their leaves that it can be used for dyeing textiles. A research project at the University of Ulm aims to preserve the traditional dyeing methods of Indonesian weavers, protect these rare trees and increase our knowledge of aluminium-accumulating plants.

    Useful algal genome sequencing

Whole-genome sequence analyses have become indispensable for algal research. Sequence analyses provide information on the evolution of different groups of algae and contribute to our understanding of the molecular mechanisms algae use to adapt to climate change as well as unlocking the potential to develop new and economically important products and technologies.

  • Article - 24/06/2009 The photo shows four pictures – origin-CFP, DnaA-YFP, DnaX-RFG and overlay, including three photos showing Bacillus subtilis cells under the fluorescence microscope. The bars indicate the dividing walls between the cells. The left photo shows the coupling of the origin areas with CFP; the green glow shows the location of the areas at the cell poles. The second photo shows the location of DnaA in the centre of the cells, coupled with red fluorescing YFP. The third photo shows the components of the replication machinery in yellow. The photo on the right shows an overlay of the three photos.

The initiation of replication – only once, please

DNA replication is a critical event in the cell division process. The genetic material must only be replicated once. So, how does a bacterial cell ensure that only one single replication occurs and that the process is not repeated several times? Microbiologists under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Peter Graumann from the Institute of Biology II in Freiburg, in cooperation with international cooperation partners from Paris, have deciphered a…
